Exactly what I was thinking. A lot of these women are also heavily edited/filtered too, like the kind of posts you’d expect to see in r/InstagramReality. I understand the point of what is *trying* to be said here, but these just aren’t very good examples - like there’s no diversity at all. These look to be cherry picked to be as close to the conventional white standards of beauty as possible, while still being juuust barely black enough to still count. 🙃

Yeah I think if anything the better rebuttal to Tophia would be to focus on a more afrocentric kind of beauty--to say "black women can also meet the hollywood idea of beauty" doesn't really accomplish anything, it almost reinforces this idea that you still need a particular set of features to "count". But to make it undeniably clear that dark-skinned, natural hair, unabashedly African women are beautiful does cut the legs right out of this stupid idea she's clinging to.

I've said it before but I firmly believe a lot of it boils down to her own racist/colourist view of black women, especially black Americans. She sees them a certain way--a dismissive, racist, way--and when she's called out for being any of the things she associates with black women, she raises that up as a shield. "Oh, you say I'm \[this or that\], well to me all black women are \[this or that\] so you're being racist" is her approach. And it's scummy as all hell.
