Oh, come on, it's not that bad. Sure, there are threads which are worse than others, but this is the reality of any big forum space, especially Reddit.
Just lurk for a bit, learn the rules, don't be obnoxious or get into pointless arguments with other members and you'll be completely fine.
That being said, the place is indeed very homophobic, transphobic, racist and so on. If this is not your cup of tea - definitely avoid

You do realize that we are talking about a place with very lax censorship where a bunch of anonymous people gather together, right? It's gonna happen and it's not gonna be pretty, that's a given. If you enjoy more strict rules and censorship - there are definitely better places. But for what it is, the farms is not that bad of a place.
Here are some positives from the top of my head:
1. I personally don't throw slurs around and I don't have to. They are not required at all to fit in, they are just not censored.
2. In the places I post the discussion is strictly on topic. Off-topic posts are a rarity, and if someone starts talking about a sensitive topic, like politics, unwarranted, they are quickly shut down. Not by mods, the other members just tell them to stop and go somewhere else. Sometimes, there is spam and mods have to handle it, but this is very rare.
3. In the places I post, the general rule is that we do not engage with lolcows. People who directly fuck with them are ridiculed and looked down upon. This is at least much better than some other place that shall not be named
