What makes Tophia keep coming back to the internet?
I’ve been thinking a lot more about the history of Tophia’s online presence ever since Donald Jr. was tragically shot, and I keep coming back to the same question: what makes Tophia keep coming back to the internet, when it’s so glaringly obvious to everyone else that the best thing to do is leave social media behind completely?
I suppose the general combativeness and inability to recognise ragebait and trolling is an integral part of what makes a lolcow a lolcow — any normal person facing so much harassment online would just step back and drop it, but lolcows seem to have this need to not only keep coming back and defending themselves against any trolling, but to also fulfil their dreams of becoming an internet sensation even though it’s clearly just a pipe dream.
Tophia’s uncanny ability to avoid all personal accountability and convince herself that she is a chronic victim is one of the things holding her back from getting a job and becoming a functional member of society. She truly and wholeheartedly doesn’t believe that her circumstances are a direct result of the decisions she’s made over the past two years, and that’s what’s ultimately been her downfall. No one takes her seriously, and everyone who gives her the time of day is just laughing at her, but still, she sees getting rich off the internet and becoming a social media sensation as somewhat attainable despite all of this.
It’s honestly such a sad case of tunnel vision. She has every ability to get her life back together, but none of the insight needed to actually get up and go through with it. It’s like she’s stuck in some sort of time loop. Despite everything she’s done, I have always held a certain degree of sympathy for Tophia and her family, partly because I feel that a lot of this lack of insight is probably due to her learning disability. I genuinely want her to understand that staying online is never going to work, and I guess I was hoping that the death of her brother — the only family member who actually has a job, would be a wake up call to begin this process. But from what she’s been saying on her most recent Instagram posts, I’m starting to think that’s not going to happen.

She doesn’t understand what an influencer does. She thinks she can turn on the camera, smile and do horrible lip syncing is it. She doesn’t understand that the big influencers have entire teams of people behind them. They have to get out and do something. It is work, and usually is more hours than her 9-5s she loves to talk down to.
Now she will expect money to come flying in. She’s saying she has to start over, she’s months late on that. Refused shelters, in some states you need to be in one to get into the system to get just a cheap apartment. I’m unsure of her state, but that’s how it is in California.
You have to be good at any work you do, she has no skills and refuses to do the simple things. Can’t even take 15 minutes to shower to keep a fast food job. She comes back to the internet because nobody irl wants to be around her and for money. Both can be fixed, but she has to do it herself. I don’t have much faith in her anymore. I, foolishly, did a couple years ago.

Pretty sure she feels the internet/tiktok gives her a good income. Shes made it clear she doesn’t want a 9-5 and has also mentioned that her mom has freaked out and begged her to stay doing social media when she’s wanted to stop. I also feel she thinks people would call and harass the business if she got a job there and it would be pointless to even try.
I hope she takes this more seriously and gets her crap together for her mom’s sake.

Deffo money first, but now its like its her only parasocial way to communicate with people. She had friends, they were her brothers, and now she doesnt have marie to talk to. Its her escapism.
