If Marie has a mental/learning disability, how was she not sent to a mental institution or not placed under guardianship custody of her family? How was she able to care for herself and live independently without being homeless prior to meeting papachu?
The general consensus on this subreddit is that marie (mamachu) is "special needs" and has very low intelligence to where she has an intellectual disability. But if that were the case, how was Marie able to avoid being sent to a mental institution or avoid being sterilized as part of the US government's eugenics program given the lack of due process and lack of respect for human rights? Especially giver her very visible "lights are on, nobody's home" look on her face.

From 1973 to 1976, the US government's Indian Health Service (IHS) carried out a sterilization program that targeted blacks, mentally disabled, latinos, and indigenous indians (the current appropriate term for Native Americans) of child-bearing age, particularly women under the age of 21. Between 1973 and 1976, over 3406 women of indigenous indian heritage were sterilized without informed consent according to the US GAO office. Many of these sterilizations occurred in New Mexico, the birthplace of the Slydells. If Marie, Tophia, and brotherchu were alive during the 60s and 70s, they would have tragically been victims of these immoral and inhumane programs.
Did Marie spend her childhood and teens in a rural "middle of nowhere" area? Or was she living in an urban or suburban area?
Given how Marie was of child-bearing age and her visible "lights are on, nobody's home" fetal alcohol syndrome appearance when these inhumane programs were occurring in her home state of New Mexico, it makes me ask how Marie was able to avoid this terrible fate given how Marie presumably went to a public school and school officials were required to notify mentally disabled students to mental institutions as it was significantly easier to have someone locked up in a mental institution without due process as all they had to do was to have a doctor testify in court that the person was incompetent and unable to live a normal life. As seen in the Willowbrook state hospital, where those with mental disabilities were just thrown in there and locked away. Given how Marie came from a Mexican Indian and Spanish family, it is safe to say that her parents would most likely have very little to no say in whether or not she was to be locked up given the segregation during that time period.
Question is, was Marie always this mentally "slow"? Did she always have that "lights are on, nobody's home" facial appearance? Was she low functioning even in her teens and 20s before meeting papachu?
Moreover, why didn't Marie's parents or family attempt to scare away papachu or at least try to get Marie away from papachu? No way a parent or family member would allow their mentally disabled family member stay with an abusive schizo scammer like papachu.
If Marie truly had a low intellectual disability, why did her parents allow her to leave her childhood home and live independently partying at nightclubs doing drugs? No parent of an adult child with a mental disability would allow their adult child to go party at nightclubs and live on their own without a proper support system. Why didn't they sign her up for conservatorship/guardianship and keep her at home? If I recall correctly, I read on this sub that she rented an apartment room from an old couple, and she somehow managed to spend all of her 20s to not end up homeless and earn enough money to afford drugs, drinks at the nightclubs, and rent. So you kinda have to give Marie credit for managing to move away from her parent's home and not end up dead or trafficked by a human trafficker.
In my opinion, Marie doesn't have an intellectual disability and that her only mental disability is probably dementia or alzheimer's as a result of old age or drug abuse from her 20s.
What do y'all think? Please leave your true and honest opinions?

I dislike them as most as anyone sane does but the way yall act like they’re not intellectually disabled is wild. It’s blatantly obvious. You can be a shitty person and be mentally stunted lmao

Also where does the shit ab Marie being a drug abuser root from? Bc if that ever did happen it was being fed to her. She isn’t even intelligent enough to understand or find that shit, plus she would definitely be seeking it out considering she has nothing going for her

because Marie said so herself on stationhead that she was a party girl who drank a lot at nightclubs and that she took some things at the nightclub that she shouldn't have taken.
plus, this was the 1980s and New Mexico has a very strong drug scene as heroin dominated the new mexico drug scene of the 1980s as part of the heroin highway.
plus, how else would marie tolerate papachu's drug addiction?

Yeah I did that when I was young too almost everyone does. That doesn’t make u a “drug abuser”. She’s also just plain dumb as shit

I’ve seen crack heads with Down syndrome. It doesn’t matter if you’re disabled unfortunately but I don’t think Marie is a junkie

I think she has always been mentally stunted.. but not enough to excuse her behavior or stop her from being independent. I have family that is mentally stunted more than marie but they function like your everyday normal adults, they just reach out for advice more often . I think Marie's problem is a moral thing. And i hate to say it but that thing is learned helplessness / laziness. And now tophia has it too. The big question is.. whats the generational root of this horrible trait? Trad wife delusions? Not wanting to go function as a normal person because of their looks? The world will never know because they are all too lazy and incompetent to get a diagnosis or seek help that doesn't involve $$$.

She also wants and believes men and family should care for her and has passed that on to Fungus. And now they are both stuck. Her family doesn't seem like the type to just leave family behind, but you can tell every time they told Marie no, she threw a tantrum just like Fungus does.

The learned helplessness and terrible living conditions are probably the result of past trauma. Beyond that, nobody can say. It would take many hours on a leather couch to figure any of it out.

I can’t imagine her ever being a smart person tbh. onto the question about papachu, even if you’re mentally disabled, you can consent to things like a relationship. am i saying it’s right? nope, but she’s an adult and her family can’t realistically do anything. i’m not sure if she’s physically disabled (i do think her and tophiachu should get genetic testing) but for mentally disabled people, especially when they’re not diagnosed, support and accommodations is very hard and if her family wanted to help, it’d be expensive (also it’s clear they’d rather just leave her alone since she’s a POS)

Realistically, her parents could have called the police and say that their mentally disabled family member marie was in an abusive relationship with papachu and that she was in danger. That or they could have sent marie's parents and siblings to pick up marie and scare papachu straight and intimidate him into leaving marie alone.

Intellectual disabilities are a spectrum. Marie definitely seems delayed to me, but not enough to where she would be institutionalized or put under a conservatorship or otherwise targeted by the government as you described. Marie probably has a low IQ, but she’s still functional enough to skate by in society with people just looking at her and wondering “wtf are you doing”

she obviously is mentally stunted but not all mentally stunted people are completely incapable of taking care of themselves. as someone else said, it's a spectrum. there are people out there that are more mentally stunted than her, yet are still capable of being independent. there are people who are LESS mentally stunted and might not be able to be independent for unrelated reasons or related reasons.

She doesn’t have dementia or Alzheimer’s lol but back then they ignored woman with disabilities and didn’t diagnose them unless it was very obvious. That’s the biggest reason autism is popping up a lot more as well because woman were thought to not have it back then

wow...that explains a lot. I just found out literally last year that at least 5 of my former high school classmates from high school had autism via from their family members on facebook and I had trouble believing as back in high school, i just thought they were socially awkward loners who didn't like talking to people. One of my former classmates (who I barely interacted with back in school) I connected with her on facebook and we talked for several weeks. But when I asked her out to a local cafe to meet up, she said she was too busy and didn't know when her schedule was free. She was a bad liar as when she said she had no plans on valentine's day, she suddenly said she had errands to run when I asked her out to meet up on valentine's day for lunch

I think you’re being way too dramatic if you think Marie should’ve been institutionalized, yeah she should have always received a government check for being slow, but i highly doubt she was as helpless as Tophia when she was younger. She did raise 2 kids (of course poorly, but that’s besides the point), but I highly doubt she was ever as useless as Tophia. Tophia got as useless as she is because someone had to wait on her and make her feel entitled her whole life and im sure that person was Marie.

Being slow doesn’t mean you should be in a mental institution…

try telling that to the Kennedy family.

I cannot think of a family that is less comparable or relevant to the Slydells than the Kennedys 😭😭😭
