They've invested in Israeli tech firms, invest in semi-conductor research in Israel, and workers have stated they match donations to (illegal under international law) settlements in occupied territory so there is a link there, but you are correct in putting Tophia on blast for half-assing an opinion on it.

Apple isn’t even on the BDS list (and they did not think that name through). The entire point of that list is that it’s virtually impossible for the average consumer to boycott every company that’s connected to Israel and by choosing priority targets, there’s a better chance more people will boycott them enough to actually make them change.

I’m probably going to update to the new iPhone because I have an iPhone 13 and, as someone said, they haven’t stopped supporting it yet, but it’s on hospice. I may keep my 13 for work, though, since I need to silo personal and professional.
I love the *idea* of Fairphones, but it sounds like there are a lot of issues with it.
Although, tangentially related, if the government goes to Apple wanting them to unlock the phones of pro-Palestinian activists, Apple is much more likely to shut them down than Alphabet or Microsoft. I feel like that’s a consideration, especially with the recent “antifa is a domestic group” and the “war on the radical left” rhetoric. I don’t think Apple is morally superior to the other two, but they’ve built their brand partially on privacy (which shouldn’t be a luxury product) and I feel like they’d take a major hit if they did.
So, yeah, I need a new phone and Apple seems like the lesser evil.
When it’s all said and done, there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, but we also have to consume to survive. All you can do is try to pick companies that align with your values and limit your consumption as much as possible. Neither of which Tophia is doing.

That’s the exact problem with almost everything Tophia says on issues like this. She generally isn’t completely wrong, but she doesn’t actually understand the issues and has no concept of nuance. I think I’m more concerned with ethical consumption than the average person and it’s usually an exhausting series of trade offs and balancing acts. For example, a few years ago my local zoo posted a list of palm oil free candies for Halloween, but a lot of them used slave labor. And Soda Stream is on the BDS list, but a lot of people who use it do it because it’s extremely low waste compared to cans and bottles. Fortunately, there are other options now, but for a long time, you had to decide between creating more waste or supporting a company in the occupied West Bank. The BDS list exists because the founders realized that a boycotting all companies with Israeli ties was impractical and unsustainable, so they came up with a short list of the worst offenders to apply pressure to.
I honestly believe that Tophia actually harms the causes she speaks in support of because the average person hears her say some crazy thing and automatically dismisses the actual issue because she makes it sound so stupid and trivial.
