Funeral home worker: what happens next

r/tophiachutiktok • by illumathoti •

I’m a funeral home worker in Washington state so I am unsure of how it is in new Mexico. But I just want to share a few things. Here in Washington if someone dies a horrific death like getting hit buy a drunk driver or in this case getting murdered the state has something called the crime victims unit help. They will grant the families of said victims up to I’ve seen as much as 8k. That’s not enough for a burial and casket but it’s more than enough for a direct cremation and return to family of remains. I’m looking into if New Mexico has something like that. I believe brotherchu is at the medical examiners office and won’t be released until they do a full autopsy. The ME office will release the loved one and tophia needs to call a funeral home and start the process of the arrangements. I know it’s early now but funerals are not cheap. This is absolutely horrific and I am heart broken and in shock. I’m looking into ways to help.

It really depends on placement of the grave, casket, and marker it really depends. A cheap casket alone will run you as much as 3thousand. I’m talking cheap Costco casket.

in oklahoma casket and burial was around 10k w/o headstone and we already owned the plot , they put really high prices on this kind of stuff because its a necessary thing unfortunately:/

Me and my family paid around 25k when my mom passed. It’s insanely expensive here in the US

I hope a social worker or another trusted adult can help. I feel like Tophia might not have the mental capacity to handle his funeral arrangements.

The fact that you have to pay large sums of money for your loved one’s burial is what’s wrong with this damn world. You can’t even die without feeling like a financial burden.

They might see if he can do organ/tissue donation

    1. riotgrrlanna Share • 17

that isn’t possible. in order to be able to donate a loved one’s remains they have to have died in a hospital so the organs are able to continue having oxygen

      1. t_town101 Share • 5

Yeah I forgot that’s true for organ. He probably can with tissue tho

    2. illumathoti Share • 9

They will not accept medical examiner cases. The flesh and organs would have already started the decomposition process. It would not be an option.

I think it varies by state then. In my state ME cases are recovered pre/post autopsy. The decomposition wouldn’t matter if the body was refrigerated in a certain time frame.

I don’t think we have that here in New Mexico to my knowledge. I do know that the welfare office use to have something for funeral assistance here but that’s just it. I can look into this too just for future reference

I'm so glad my parents want to be cremated and have their ashes spread.
