Tophia and everyone in the chu lore are just a product of their environment.
Clearly that’s obvious, but I just wanted to make a point that New Mexico is ranked 50th (last place) in the US for education. The Slydell’s, Angie, and any other characters in the chuniverse from New Mexico are debilitatingly uneducated, it’s very interesting to think about how drastically different their lives would be if they were able to receive at least a bare minimum education. I grew up and went to school in a state in the bottom 10, along with having an undiagnosed learning disability until AFTER I graduated high school, but I’ve managed to establish a profitable career that I enjoy and that pays my bills to allow me to live independently. Just thought that was interesting.

It’s a mix of our poor education system here in NM as well as lack of care/concern from her parents/home life. I promise not everyone from New Mexico is this, for lack of a better word, stupid.

She should have to look out for yourself though. she couldve looked into furthering her education or looked into some sort of assistance for adult classes. She’s 30 years old at some point you have to stop making excuses
I just think they’re comfortable being broke. When you get comfortable you amount to nothing
