Tophia and New Mexico
Tophia has a long-standing disdain for her home state of New Mexico. From lamenting about how "boring" New Mexico is, to whining about moving out of the state, to her hatred of the predominantly Latino population, and her complaints about the homeless population of Albuquerque despite her current, godawful situation. Fittingly, New Mexico is the perfect state for Tophia, being the homeless, filthy, uneducated douchebag who desperately wants to be 14 again.
New Mexico is an overall horrible state in terms of every statistic there is. It ranks 49th in education, 4th in poverty, 1st in violent crime, 43rd in healthcare, 6th in drug overdoses, and 41st in states with the highest HDI (Human Development Index). All of New Mexico's setbacks have evidently taken a toll on the Slydells, who are uneducated, homeless, overweight, in crippling poverty, and cognitively challenged without any support. Despite being homeless, Tophia thinks that she can afford a costly move out of New Mexico to a comfortable apartment in Los Angeles, where she can live in her fantasy of walking to the local Starbucks, browsing leggings at Lululemon, buying a smoothie at Erewhon, sampling food in Koreatown, and streaming in an aesthetic pink gaming room with RGB strip lighting, posters of BTS on the wall, shelves filled with anime figures, a Squishmallow corner, a makeup desk, a decked-out PC with RGB triangles above it, and a queen-sized bed filled to the brim with throw pillows to sleep in with no worries at all. However, Tophia lives in New Mexico, a state that doesn't take kindly to her fantasy, being the impoverished, miserable hellhole that it is with the majority of the population being White, Hispanic, and Native American, three groups that Tophia dislikes instead of having a large Asian population like California or New York.
With widespread poverty, the ever-prevalent opioid crisis, and the overall feeling of depression in New Mexico, it would be logical for anyone to leave the state in search of a better one. However, Tophia, Donald Jr., and Marie have no option but to remain in New Mexico due to having almost no source of income because of being terminally unemployed. If Tophia were desperate to get out of the state to form a better life in Arizona, Colorado, or eventually California, she would get an entry-level job and push Donald Jr. and Marie to do the same. Then, the Slydells could continuously pool their incomes together to focus on renting an apartment in a different state, such as Arizona or Colorado, where they could all live together until Tophia, Marie, and Donald Jr. are stable enough to look into renting their own places.
If Tophia cared about her current situation in life, she would have done something similar to what I have outlined for them. However, Tophia wants to live in an e-girl fantasy that will be impossible if she doesn't take life more seriously. For now, Tophia and the rest of her inbred kin will remain in the crime-ridden, heroin-infested city of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

It’s hilarious that Tophia thinks she can afford an apartment in LA. Does she understand how expensive living in the PNW is? A STUDIO apartment in LA is going to be over $2,000 per month, which is literally one room that *might* include a bathroom and, if you’re lucky, will include a kitchen and washer/dryer (most of the time with studio apartments there is a public kitchen/washer/dryer). For Tophia, Marie and Donald Jr to move into a 3 bedroom apartment in LA would be an ungodly amount of money that she literally cannot afford. A regular 9 to 5 job doesn’t cover the cost of a 3 bedroom apartment in LA, you have to have a good job with a college degree, unless you’re famous or a business owner, which she isn’t. I have never seen someone so delusional

You laid it out like a professor. 🔥
Also let the record show, I’m speaking on behalf of Asian guys like myself, Tophia will never get an Asian boyfriend. Asian guys aren’t the type to sleep with obese, smelly, broke, homeless, racist white trash like Tophia.

I'm going to make Marie lose her shit with this one. Be prepared for a grammatically incorrect wall of text coming at me.

how is nm 49th in education based on those data sources? just wondering
i also think this is a very black and white take on the stated poverty level/socioeconomic conditions based on the fact that we know how america treats natives and hispanic people..tophia is just tophia, i dont think painting the entire state in a negative light is helpful lol.
you are right that she is living in a fantasy land. honestly its just sad.

Literally this. I cannot fathom how she just doesn’t get bored of her life at this point. All they do is sloth around their motel room the entire day expecting for their lives to be changed immediately. I understand that New Mexico is a statistically challenged state, and I feel for the people affected by it, but she really can’t complain when there is no one in their family working. If they were smart, they could all start beginner level jobs and pool up money together. Tophia could even take courses or something to get into a somewhat better job after that point, but no. I really want them to improve, and I want to see them make progress, but god it’s so degrading to see an entire family just unemployed, sitting, living thinking only about how they’re going to live that day, without giving their future a single thought. Tophia is under the unrealistic expectation that she will be fed opportunities from a silver spoon instead of finally taking some control of her life.
Reading this hits different when you also live in ABQ 😭💀
